Honolulu, Hawai`i - The First International Distinguished Scholar Program came to a successful close on April 17th, with medical experts from the US and China agreeing that the program was a tremendous success. Designed to promote cooperation in medical rehabilitation, the program featured experts in Rehabilitation Medicine from the China Rehabilitation Research Center in Beijing, the People's Republic of China.

Prof. Li Jianjun updates his Honolulu audience on the current status of Spinal Cord Injury diagnosis and treatment in the People's Republic of China. Prof. Li is recognized as a leading expert in China on the surgical treatment and rehabilitation of Spinal Cord Injury, and is the Director of the China Rehabilitation Research Center.

Founded in 1988, the China Rehabilitation Research Center (CRRC) is the pre-eminent provider of medical rehabilitation services in China. In addition to providing comprehensive medical, surgical and rehabilitation to patients with disabling injuries, the CRRC has been a pioneer in neuroscience research and plays a leading role in the development of medical rehabilitation centers throughout China. Recently the center was a major component in the Chinese response to the devastating earthquakes in Sichuan Province.
The CRRC was represented by Prof. Li Jianjun, Director of the Center and President of its associated Beijing Bo Ai Hospital. Prof. Li is a trained Orthopedic Surgeon and is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts on Spinal Cord Injury in China. Prof. Li gave presentations on the Management of Spinal Cord Injury in China and on the Status of Medical Rehabilitation in China.

Joining Prof. Li in the Program was Senior Dr. Zheng Tao, of the Dept. of Chinese Medicine at the CRRC. Dr. Zheng is a graduate of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and has over fifteen years experience in the integration of Chinese and Western Medicine in the treatment of disabling injuries. In addition to speaking on the Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine in Rehabilitation, Dr. Zheng gave a demonstration of Chinese Medicine techniques for physicians and acupuncturists.
The International Distinguished Scholar Program was hosted by the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, with support from Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation. Funding for the program was generously provided by the Lin and Ella Wong Foundation of Honolulu, with additional support from the Cheng Health Foundation.
